Mentorship: The Most Valuable Investment in Your Journey

One of my mentors once told me to "be authentic, stay prepared, and understand your why."

At the time, it seemed like simple advice, but throughout pharmacy school, fellowship recruitment, and the many decisions that shaped my career, those words became a guiding principle. The more you understand what you're looking for and why you're pursuing it, the more confidently you'll recognize the right opportunities when they come along. 

Looking back on my pharmacy journey, one of the most impactful factors in my growth has been mentorship. Many of the opportunities I've pursued, lessons I've learned, and successes I've achieved were made possible because someone took the time to guide, support, and invest in me. Mentors helped me navigate uncertainty, challenge myself, and see possibilities that I may not have discovered on my own. 

When students ask me how to prepare for their future careers, my answer often starts with finding someone you genuinely connect with. While there is no single roadmap to success, having mentors who can provide perspective, challenge your thinking, and support your growth can make an incredible difference. 

• Finding the Right Mentors: One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that mentorship doesn't have to come from a single person. Throughout pharmacy school and beyond, I found that different mentors played different roles in my development. Some provided career guidance, others opened doors to research opportunities, helped me prepare for interviews, or offered leadership advice. Don't be afraid to reach out to individuals whose careers inspire you. 

• Learning Through Their Experiences: Every mentor has a unique story, and there is tremendous value in learning from their experiences. One of the greatest benefits of mentorship is gaining insight from people who have already navigated challenges similar to your own. Whether it was learning about fellowship opportunities or making important career decisions my mentors helped me broaden my perspective. 

• Growth Through Challenges: Mentorship becomes especially valuable during setbacks. Throughout my journey, there were moments when things didn't go according to plan. During those times, mentors reminded me that setbacks are not failures—they are opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow. Having people who believed in me, challenged me to keep moving forward, and helped me maintain perspective was invaluable. Sometimes the most important thing a mentor provides isn't an answer, but the confidence to trust yourself as you find one. 

• Paying It Forward: As I've progressed in my career, I've come to appreciate that mentorship is a two-way relationship. While mentors help shape our paths, we also have a responsibility to support those coming after us. Some of the most rewarding experiences I've had have been helping students explore career opportunities, sharing lessons I've learned, and hopefully providing the same guidance that others once provided me. Mentorship creates a cycle of growth that extends far beyond any one individual. 

At the end of the day mentorship is often the catalyst that helps unlock new opportunities. Seek out mentors who challenge you, support you, and inspire you to grow. The relationships you build may become some of the most valuable and lasting investments in your professional journey. And always remember even the most accomplished mentors were once mentees themselves. No matter where you are in your career, there is always something to learn and someone who can help guide you along the way.
